Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Macallin Fiqi, held talks in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart, Lieutenant General Abdel Majeed Saqar, to discuss regional security and bilateral cooperation. Senior officials from the Egyptian Armed Forces were also present at the meeting.
The two ministers discussed strengthening military cooperation and supporting efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region. Minister Fiqi praised Egypt’s prominent role in regional peace and stability, noting that Somalia and Egypt share a unified vision regarding their strategic interests.
Lieutenant General Abdel Majeed Saqar emphasized Egypt’s commitment to deepening military cooperation between the two countries. He also announced that Egyptian troops participating in the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) would soon arrive in Somalia.
Somalia and Egypt previously signed a security agreement, which was reinforced following the controversial deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland, in which Addis Ababa sought access to a maritime route.
Since that agreement, Egypt has been providing Somalia with military equipment and weapons and plans to deploy trained troops to Somalia. Cairo plays a significant role in strengthening Somali forces, providing modern weapons and equipment to enhance their capabilities.
