Dhumay, Las Anod District, Sool Region
The Ministry of Energy & Water Resources of the North Eastern State of Somalia, in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has successfully completed the rehabilitation and upgrading of the community borehole in Dhumay village, located within Las Anod District.
The project was implemented to improve access to safe and reliable water for residents of Dhumay and neighbouring communities, particularly during the prolonged dry season when water shortages place significant pressure on local households and livestock. The rehabilitation included repairing key components of the borehole, restoring damaged infrastructure and improving the overall functionality of the water supply system to ensure uninterrupted service.
Officials from the Ministry noted that the upgraded borehole is expected to significantly increase the availability of clean water, reducing the distance many families previously travelled to obtain water and helping to strengthen the resilience of the community during periods of drought.
The rehabilitation forms part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to improve water infrastructure throughout the North Eastern State of Somalia. In collaboration with humanitarian and development partners, the Ministry continues to invest in projects aimed at expanding access to safe drinking water and improving the sustainability of essential water services in both urban and rural communities.
In addition to rehabilitation works, the Ministry is implementing a wider programme that includes drilling new boreholes, constructing Biyo-xireen (water reservoirs), rehabilitating existing water systems and carrying out regular maintenance of critical water infrastructure. These initiatives are designed to enhance water security, improve service reliability and support the long-term management of water resources across the region.
Community members welcomed the completion of the project, describing it as a significant improvement for families, pastoralists and local institutions that rely on the borehole for their daily water needs. Residents expressed appreciation for the collaboration between the Ministry and the ICRC, noting that dependable access to clean water contributes directly to improved public health, livestock production and local livelihoods.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continuing investments in water infrastructure across the Sool, Sanaag and Cayn regions, emphasising that expanding access to clean water remains one of its highest development priorities. Officials stated that partnerships with organisations such as the ICRC will continue to play an important role in strengthening water services and improving the quality of life for communities throughout the North Eastern State of Somalia.
