President Hassan Sheikh: “We Resolve Our Conflicts Ourselves; Force and Guns Cannot Settle Them”

While addressing the formation of the new administration in Northeast Somalia, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) will play an active role in fostering peace and promoting coexistence in the region, which includes areas under both Puntland and Somaliland.

The President urged the public and the new Northeast administration to prioritize security and strengthen reconciliation efforts, particularly in relations with neighboring administrations. He emphasized that the FGS is ready to fully facilitate cooperation and peaceful coexistence among local communities and neighboring regions.

“The Federal Government of Somalia will nurture all initiatives that facilitate collaboration and peaceful coexistence in these areas and their neighbors,” President Hassan said.

He also addressed the issue of prisoners held between Somaliland and Northeast Somalia, describing the practice as unacceptable. He called on both sides to treat detainees with dignity and return them to their respective regions, framing this as a key step toward peace.

Additionally, the President spoke about other conflicts affecting the country. He rejected any foreign interference in Somalia’s reconciliation process, asserting:

“We resolve our conflicts ourselves; they should not be approached with force or weapons. They must be resolved through dialogue and negotiation.” He noted that past conflicts in Somalia caused extensive destruction and ongoing foreign involvement.

President Hassan also announced that the government will create space for politicians and community leaders with differing opinions, ensuring that all Somali voices are heard, while rejecting the ambitions of any single individual.

On electoral matters, he highlighted the strong public support for democratic processes, noting high voter registration in the Banaadir region as a clear rejection of indirect elections.

“For those who support or dream of indirect elections, I believe they will receive a response from the millions of registered voters in Banaadir. I am confident that our people have reached a point where one-person, one-vote elections cannot be reversed,” he added.

In his speech opening the 7th session of the 11th Parliament, President Hassan expressed optimism that Somalia can overcome past conflicts and fully utilize its natural resources to transform them into practical opportunities that improve the lives of its citizens.
