Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo – December 7, 2024

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote human rights, democracy, and conflict prevention across Africa, the Permanent Committee on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolution of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) has undertaken a high-level mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) — with the participation of H.E. Zamzam Muhumed Omar, Member of the Federal Parliament of Somalia and the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), widely known as Gobsan Muhumed Omar.

The visit consists of two major missions aimed at promoting peace, stability, and democratic governance in the region:
1. A post-electoral mission to assess progress following the 2023 general elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
2. A fact-finding mission focusing on the peace and security situation in Goma, North Kivu, in Eastern Congo.

During the visit, H.E. Zamzam Muhumed Omar, together with other distinguished members of the Pan-African Parliament, engaged with national and local authorities, regional stakeholders, and civil society organizations to review ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, advance democracy, and safeguard human rights in Eastern Congo.

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) continues to play a pivotal role in advocating for the ratification and implementation of key African Union (AU) instruments, political norms, and development programs, while also monitoring their enforcement across AU Member States.

Speaking during the mission, H.E. Zamzam Muhumed Omar emphasized the importance of African solidarity and collaboration in addressing regional challenges, noting that institutions like the Pan-African Parliament are vital for achieving lasting peace, unity, and democratic progress across the continent.

This high-level visit reflects the Pan-African Parliament’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that African nations uphold democratic values, strengthen regional cooperation, and work together for a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
