African journalist Mohamed Abdulaahi Cantuuge joined hundreds of journalists, media executives, policymakers, technology experts, and civil society representatives at the 4th Africa Media Convention (AMC 2025) held in Marrakech, Morocco, from 29–31 May 2025.
The three-day convention focused on the theme “AI, Press Freedom and Access to Information: Navigating the Future of Africa’s Media.” The conference examined how African media can embrace technological innovation while protecting press freedom and strengthening public access to reliable information.
Throughout the convention, Mohamed Abdulaahi Cantuuge participated in discussions exploring the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism. Experts demonstrated how AI can improve news production, content verification, and newsroom efficiency, while also warning about ethical concerns and the risks of misinformation.
Another major topic was the protection of journalists across Africa. Participants highlighted the need to improve press freedom, enhance the safety of media professionals, and create legal environments that allow independent journalism to flourish.
The convention also addressed the growing challenge of misinformation and disinformation. Speakers encouraged stronger fact-checking systems, greater media literacy, and closer cooperation between media organizations to maintain public confidence in news reporting.
Speaking after the event, Mohamed Abdulaahi Cantuuge described the convention as an important platform for exchanging ideas with media professionals from across the continent. He noted that discussions on AI, innovation, and media sustainability will help shape the future of African journalism.
The conference concluded with the adoption of the Marrakech Declaration, which calls for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in African media while safeguarding press freedom, journalistic ethics, and citizens’ right to accurate information. The declaration also encourages African governments and media institutions to work together in building an independent, innovative, and trusted media sector.
